What an absolutely fantastic weekend for Shanghai Gaelic Football Club. The men, captained by Jack Meng, came away champions of their competition for the first time in 8 years. Both the semi final and the final were incredibly exciting, both going to extra time, thanks to a last minute break in the Final to score 3 points. The win was clenched by an absolutely spectacular winning point in the post extra time ‘Sudden Death’. The girls ‘A’ Team showed huge determination and courage to fight back from 7 points down just after half time to get within 1 point of Singapore ‘A’s, but Singapore snatched a last minute goal against the run of play to clinch the championship. What a final game. The ladies ‘B’ Team, most of whom were playing their first ever football tournament and captained by Heather McIsaac, put in an excellent, fighting performance in an extremely strong competition.
Our sincere thanks goes to coaches Ciaran Manion, Peter Mooney and Jussara Bierman for preparing these teams for their remarkable performances. For the club to have received 3 ‘Allstar’ awards and the tournament MVP is a tremendous achievement.
The ‘Club of The Year’ award is a reflection of the huge amount of work that has been put in to the club in the last 2 years by the 2013 Committee, the Hurling Allstars Committee, this year’s Club Committee and the China Games Committee. It is also testament to the amazing spirit, support and commitment of our members, players and friends. It was a huge honour and a privilege to collect this award.
The activities and achievements of the club would not be possible without the help of our sponsors Kerry Group, Moore Watson, Pacific Prime, PM Group, The Camel & The Blarney Stone, JJ Premier, Distag, Shanghai Ireland Association, Dragon Events, AM and Magners. We are very grateful for their support.
