Gaelic football has links to varieties of football played in Ireland, known collectively as caid, with the first record of any form of football dating back to 1308. The earliest records of a recognized precursor to the modern game date from a match in County Meath in 1670, in which catching and kicking the ball was permitted. Gaelic football was first codified in 1887.
